Our Served Agency
Franklin County ARES supports the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency.
Supporting Franklin County Emergency Management
Franklin County ARES exists to support our served agency, the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA). A "served agency" is the organization an ARES group provides communications support to. For us, that is the county's emergency management office — the same office that coordinates the county's response to storms, floods, and other emergencies.
We meet at the Franklin County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), 120 County Way, Farmington, ME — the same facility as the EMA — which keeps us close to the emergency managers we serve.
How the partnership works
- We support; the EMA directs. During an activation, our Emergency Coordinator takes direction from the County EMA Director through the Incident Command System (ICS).
- We provide backup communications. When normal systems are overloaded or down, our volunteers can relay messages by radio between shelters, response sites, and the EOC.
- We train and exercise together. Regular nets, drills, and the annual Simulated Emergency Test keep us ready to plug in smoothly when needed.
